Oyo Teachers Suspend Strike Amid Security Concerns

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Oyo State has suspended its strike, which began on June 1, 2026, due to security concerns stemming from the abduction of teachers and pupils in the Oriir Local Government Area. This decision followed renewed engagement between the union and the state government, which made several commitments to enhance security in schools.

These commitments include intensifying rescue efforts for abducted individuals, establishing a joint security task force, and improving infrastructure to tackle illegal activities. The union urged teachers to remain vigilant and report any security threats.

Dotun Oyelad, the commission's inform principal, commended the union's leadership for their mature response to the situation. The state government expressed its commitment to strengthening school security and ensuring the safety of teachers and learners, aiming to restore stability in the educational sector.
