Oyo Teachers Strike Over Abduction of Colleagues and Pupils

Teachers in Oyo State have commenced a strike in response to the abduction of at least 46 pupils and teachers from various schools, including Baptist Nursery and Primary School and Grammar School in Yawota, Oriire Local Government Area, on May 15. The Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), through its state chairman Hassan Fatai and secretary Salami Olukayode, issued a joint statement declaring that the industrial action will persist until there is concrete progress in rescuing the abducted victims.

The prolonged captivity of the teachers and pupils has heightened fear and anxiety among educational stakeholders, discouraging parents from sending their children to school, thereby disrupting academic activities. The NUT's strike aims to compel relevant authorities to intensify efforts toward securing the safe and unconditional release of the abducted individuals without further delay.

Teachers in public primary and secondary schools have been urged to comply strictly with the directive and remain at home throughout the duration of the strike.
