Oyo Schools Reopen as NUT Suspends Strike for Safety

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has announced the suspension of its industrial action, allowing public primary and secondary schools in Oyo State to reopen on Thursday, July 2, 2026. This decision was made after renewed discussions with the Oyo State Government, which provided assurances to strengthen security measures to protect schools following recent abductions of teachers and students in Oriire Local Government Area.

The joint statement was signed by Oyo State NUT Chairman Comrade Hassan Ajibola and State Secretary Comrade Olukayode Salami. The union's leadership emphasized that the suspension of the strike was in the interest of the public, learners, and teachers.

The Oyo State Government committed to enhancing safety operations, including intensified rescue missions for victims and the establishment of a joint security task force. The union urged teachers to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to relevant authorities to ensure a safer educational environment.
