Acid Attack on Female Doctor Sparks Protests in Quetta

On June 5, 2026, Dr. Mahnoor Nasir, a 29-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor, was the victim of a brutal acid attack inside Sandeman Hospital, Quetta, Balochistan.

The assailant, identified as 27-year-old Humayun Shah, reportedly entered her private room and threw acid on her, resulting in severe burns covering 70% of her body. However, subsequent assessments indicated that 13% of her body sustained acid burns, affecting her face, abdomen, thigh, and right hand.

Abdul Razzaq Tarakai, a hospital employee, sustained injuries while attempting to protect Dr. Nasir.

Following the attack, she was airlifted to Karachi for advanced medical care at Aga Khan University Hospital, where her eyesight was confirmed to be intact. The incident has led to protests organized by the Young Doctors Association (YDA), demanding a transparent judicial inquiry and improved security measures for female healthcare workers.

The Balochistan Chief Minister, Sarfraz Bugti, announced a civil award for Tarakai for his bravery during the incident.
