PANDEF Advocates for Fiscal Federalism in Nigeria

On Monday in Abuja, Ambassador Godknows Igali, the National Chairman of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), advocated for the restoration of true fiscal federalism at the Concerned Citizens Assembly summit organized by the Citizens Rebirth and Awareness Initiative (C-RAIN). Igali argued that Nigeria's over-centralized system has weakened productivity, security, and accountability.

He highlighted the historical success of regional development, citing examples such as free primary education in the Western Region and industrial growth in the Eastern Region. Igali criticized state governors for not translating regional cooperation into economic development and called for constitutional amendments to devolve powers, enhance fiscal federalism, and ensure local government autonomy.

He emphasized that restructuring should not be mistaken for disintegration but should aim to strengthen national unity. Owolabi Oladejo, the summit's convener, stated that restructuring is essential for national survival, while Ali Ocheni of TRG noted widespread concerns over excessive centralization across Nigeria's six geopolitical zones.
