PDP Factions Clash Over Leadership and Upcoming Convention

The People's Democratic Party (PDP) is experiencing renewed internal strife as factions clash over leadership positions and the upcoming convention. Governor Nyemson Wike's faction is distancing itself from the party's national chairman and secretary, asserting that the process leading to the recent convention on November 16 in Ibadan violated the Electoral Act and the Nigerian Constitution.

Wike's camp is pursuing legal redress to challenge the legitimacy of the convention, which resulted in the election of the National Working Committee (NWC) led by Tanimu Turaki. A recent court ruling upheld a previous decision that nullified the convention, declaring the election of Turaki and his committee invalid.

Despite indications of a willingness to reconcile, fresh disagreements threaten to derail peace efforts. Former presidential candidate Gbenga Olawepo Hashim has warned that Wike's faction's actions could deepen divisions within the party, potentially threatening its unity and survival ahead of future elections.
