The announcement was made in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who attributed Banigo's decision to ongoing divisions within the PDP.

In her letter, Banigo expressed her support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope agenda, emphasizing the need for leadership that aligns with the administration's reform goals. The defection comes amid political dynamics in Rivers State, where Governor Nyesom Wike and the current governor Siminalayi Fubara are significant figures.
