Abdulsalami Abubakar Advocates for Electoral Trust Ahead of 2027

Abdulsalami Abubakar, the former Head of State, convened a meeting of the National Peace Committee on Monday in Abuja, where he highlighted the committee's role in providing a neutral platform for dialogue among political actors. The meeting, which included stakeholders from various political parties, civil society organizations, and security agencies, aimed to discuss the 2015 Peace Accord as a stabilizing instrument for Nigeria's electoral process.

Joash Amupitan, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), appealed for intensified efforts to rebuild public trust in the electoral system ahead of the 2027 general elections. He noted the significant trust deficit in the electoral landscape, which poses a major challenge to democratic consolidation.

Amupitan urged political parties to strengthen internal discipline and enhance voter mobilization to reverse declining turnout. The discussions emphasized the need for collaboration among stakeholders to ensure credible elections and maintain public confidence in the electoral process.
