PENGASSAN Strike Causes N180bn Loss to Nigerian Economy

The Nigerian economy faced a significant loss of over N180 billion due to a three-day strike by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN). The strike, which began on September 28, was in protest against the alleged mass transfer and sacking of 800 workers at the Dangote Refinery in Lagos.

PENGASSAN accused the refinery of replacing Nigerian workers with foreign nationals, a claim the company denied. The industrial action disrupted gas and crude oil supplies to the refinery, raising concerns about potential energy supply disruptions and economic instability.

The situation prompted the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited to address the potential consequences in a letter.
