Pensioners Threaten Legal Action Over Unpaid Gratuities

Pensioners in Southwest Nigeria are threatening to take legal action against their governors due to the non-payment of gratuities that date back to 2011. Olusegun Abatan, a major member of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, disclosed this during a quarterly meeting held in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

He emphasized that despite appeals to the governors, including Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and Lucky Ayedatiwa of Ondo State, there has been no positive response. The pensioners lamented that the amount they were supposed to receive, such as 10,000 naira from 2011, has significantly lost value by 2026.

They expressed their determination to fight for their rights in court, highlighting the inadequate minimum pension of 25,000 naira and the disparity with the national minimum wage of 70,000 naira. The union accused the governors of unfair delays in pension payments and called for serious negotiations to address these issues.
