Lagos Pensioners Threaten Protest Over Unpaid Arrears

Pensioners in Lagos State, represented by Comrade Michael Omisand, the chairman of the Nigeria Union Pension Contributory Pension Scheme (NUPCP), are threatening mass protests due to unpaid pension arrears. Omisand warned that unless the Lagos State Pension Commission (LASPEC) concludes its cost assessment and begins payments by the stipulated timeline, retirees will have no choice but to take to the streets to demand justice.

He highlighted the plight of 60 former staff members of Lagos State University, Ijanikin, who retired between 2023 and 2026 but have yet to receive their entitled pensions, causing severe financial distress. Omisand recalled a meeting on May 27, 2025, where the state governor pledged to act once the federal government's pension implementation template became available, which was received on January 12, 2026.

However, as of February 27, 2026, LASPEC has not taken concrete action, leading to frustration among retirees who continue to suffer due to the delays.
