Union Urges Tinubu to Ensure Pension Increases for Retirees

The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), represented by Godwin Abumisi, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to encourage state governors to fully implement the approved pension increases at the state level. This appeal coincided with Tinubu's 74th birthday, where the union acknowledged his leadership and commitment to improving the welfare of retirees.

The NUP noted that the federal government recently approved a ₦700 billion intervention to clear outstanding liabilities in the contributory pension scheme, which includes ₦57 billion for the defined benefit scheme. This intervention aims to address long-standing arrears and restore confidence among retirees who have faced years of uncertainty and hardship.

The union praised the government's efforts in ensuring timely monthly pension payments and stressed the importance of implementing similar reforms at the state level. Additionally, they reiterated the need for a health insurance scheme for pensioners, emphasizing its critical role in enhancing retirees' welfare.
