Peter Obi Demands N5bn from Kenneth Okonkwo for Defamation

Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State and a member of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, has demanded N5 billion in damages and a public apology from actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo over alleged defamatory statements made during a television interview on June 8, 2026. Obi's lawyer, Alex Ejesiem, accused Okonkwo of making false and malicious claims that portrayed Obi as involved in bribery and criminal activities.

The allegations were reportedly disseminated across various media platforms. Obi's legal team described Okonkwo's statements as reckless and unsupported by facts, constituting a direct attack on Obi's integrity.

They have given Okonkwo seven days from the receipt of their letter to withdraw his statements and issue an unequivocal apology. Failure to comply will leave Obi with no choice but to pursue legal redress, including claims for damages and injunctive relief.

In response, Okonkwo dismissed the demands, suggesting that Obi is attempting to extort money for his campaign.
