Peter Obi Warns Against Suppression of Dissent in Nigeria

Peter Obi, a prominent member of the Democratic Party and former governor of Anambra State, reacted to the remand of activist Omoyele Sowore in Kuje Prison. In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, Obi cautioned against actions that appear to suppress dissent and undermine civic freedoms in Nigeria.

He noted that the judiciary must act as an impartial arbiter of justice and warned that treating critics and activists as threats could signal a dangerous slide toward authoritarianism. Obi emphasized that freedom of expression and peaceful assembly are core pillars of democracy that must be protected.

He also highlighted the existing insecurity and economic hardship in Nigeria, urging the government to avoid actions that could further inflame tensions. Obi called for inclusive dialogue to foster national cohesion and urged relevant authorities to ensure Sowore's rights are protected and due process is followed, reinforcing the need for strict adherence to the rule of law.
