Obi Criticizes DSS for Arrest of Surgeon Aghaji

Peter Obi, a former presidential candidate and governor of Anambra State, reacted to the Department of State Services (DSS) apologizing to Professor Martin Aghaji, a 74-year-old renowned cardiothoracic surgeon, after his arrest. Aghaji was detained at his residence in Enugu early in the morning without prior notification while visiting his daughter.

Obi condemned the manner of the arrest, emphasizing Aghaji's global recognition and contributions to Nigeria's healthcare sector. He noted that Aghaji was held for three days before being released, with the DSS later admitting the arrest was a mistake.

Obi expressed concern that such incidents discourage skilled professionals from remaining in Nigeria, exacerbating the existing challenges in the healthcare sector due to the increasing emigration of doctors and healthcare workers. He warned that the treatment of citizens, particularly professionals, undermines the rule of law and could lead to further migration of talent abroad.
