Peter Obi visits Sokoto IDP camp, demands better conditions

On Tuesday, Peter Obi—presidential candidate representing the Nigeria Democratic Congress—made his way to Sokoto State's Ramin Kura Internally Displaced Persons camp. There he met with over 1,000 residents, examined their circumstances directly, and toured the facility's conditions.
Following this inspection, he released remarks urging government bodies to act swiftly in enhancing the camp's situation. The former Anambra governor pointed out concrete problems at the site.
Displaced persons occupy makeshift shelters, he noted, while essential amenities remain unavailable. His observations documented the lack of proper sanitation infrastructure, absence of healthcare services, and no school provision for the young.
Obi deemed this reality unacceptable in a country not formally at war. Framing displacement as symptomatic of broader governance failures, Obi attributed the core problem to ongoing regional violence.
He called for a two-pronged governmental response: first, tackling the banditry and insecurity driving people from their homes with determination; second, establishing safety guarantees that would enable displaced Nigerians to rebuild their lives in their original communities rather than languishing in temporary camps. This advocacy underscores Obi's attention to humanitarian concerns tied to Nigeria's security crisis.
Residents at Ramin Kura have fled banditry-related violence in the northwest, part of a wider pattern of conflict that has scattered populations throughout multiple regions.
