Peter Obi's 2027 Campaign Targets N500/$1 Exchange Rate to Cut Costs

Pat Utomi says NDC candidate aims to strengthen the naira by nearly two-thirds, projecting 50% drops in food prices if elected president.
Peter Obi's 2027 presidential campaign includes an ambitious target: appreciating the naira to N500 per dollar. This proposal comes from Pat Utomi, a political economist who leads the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Currently, the naira trades around N1,350 per dollar on the official market. Utomi has positioned this exchange rate goal as central to Obi's economic platform for the race.
The potential benefits, according to Utomi, would be far-reaching. Food prices could tumble by roughly 50 percent if this naira strength materializes.
Such currency appreciation would help combat the inflation currently straining Nigerian household finances. Utomi's broader strategy encompasses not only the exchange rate adjustment but also infrastructure spending and structural economic reforms to support these gains.
Restoring purchasing power for average Nigerians forms a key justification for the initiative. Utomi argues that moving from the current depreciated naira level to N500 per dollar would reduce poverty and revive economic capacity among ordinary citizens.
This currency objective ties to wider improvements in security, electricity, road infrastructure and institutional frameworks. The NDC has incorporated this target into its manifesto ahead of the 2027 election cycle.
Recent currency performance has been weak. On the official Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market in late May, the naira stood at N1,346.86 per dollar.
The parallel market saw the dollar trading at roughly N1,385 during the same timeframe. Utomi's detailed economic pledge emerges as one of the first comprehensive proposals from a major opposition figure in preparation for the upcoming presidential contest.
