Pat Utomi Backs Peter Obi for 2027 Presidential Race

Prof. Pat Utomi, a political economist and public affairs commentator, has publicly endorsed Peter Obi's presidential ambition for the 2027 general election. He announced his support via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, emphasizing that his backing is not based on personal loyalty but on the type of leadership Nigeria requires at this juncture.

Obi was ratified as the presidential candidate of the NDC on May 29, 2026. Utomi has previously warned that he would withdraw his support if Obi were to accept a running-mate position under another candidate.

His endorsement comes amid ongoing internal consultations among opposition forces, where Utomi is also engaged in discussions to identify a single opposition candidate for the presidential race. Additionally, Utomi advocates for a conversation regarding the age of candidates for executive office, suggesting a cap of 70 years for presidential and governorship candidates, arguing that Nigeria needs forward-looking leadership rather than a continuation of established political figures.
