Tinubu Declares Elimination of Piracy in Nigerian Waters

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared that piracy has been eliminated in Nigerian waters, a significant achievement attributed to the Nigerian Government's sustained investments in maritime security and infrastructure. This includes the implementation of the Deep Blue Project, which deploys an integrated network of intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance assets, and command control centers.

The project features special mission vessels, fast intervention boats, and aerial platforms. Tinubu made this announcement following a high-level roundtable on maritime sovereignty and ocean governance during the Africa Forward Summit 2026 in Kenya.

He emphasized that the elimination of piracy incidents has led to a substantial reduction in attacks across the Gulf of Guinea. Tinubu asserted that maritime sovereignty is crucial for Africa's future and that secure sea lanes are necessary to attract private capital for the blue economy.
