Plateau Diphtheria Outbreak: 27 Deaths, 303 Cases Reported

The diphtheria outbreak in Plateau State, Nigeria, has escalated, with the number of suspected cases reaching 303 and the death toll climbing to 27, as reported by Plateau State Epidemiologist Dr Maren Damulak during a briefing in Jos. The Jos North Local Government Area has been identified as the region with the highest number of suspected cases, particularly in the Rikkos community.

A significant proportion of those affected are children. In response to the outbreak, the state government has intensified efforts in disease surveillance, contact tracing, community awareness campaigns, and vaccination activities in the impacted areas.

Diphtheria is a bacterial infection that is preventable through vaccination but can lead to severe complications, including breathing difficulties. This outbreak raises concerns regarding vaccination coverage and the ability of health authorities to respond effectively to outbreaks of preventable diseases.
