Journalist Detained Over Alleged Defamation in Niger State

A journalist associated with Sakp, a radio station based in Minna, Niger State, has been detained by the Niger State Police Command. This action follows a complaint lodged by Moham Gimba, the protocol aide to Governor Moham Umar Bago.

The complaint reportedly stems from a press statement published on Crusad Radio's Facebook platform, which allegedly addressed political crises in the Niger South Senatorial District. The police spokesperson, Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed that the arrest was made after a petition was filed against the journalist for alleged falsehood and defamation, as well as cyberbullying.

The journalist was invited for questioning on Monday, and the matter is currently under investigation. The journalist is expected to face charges in court on February 16, 2025.

The International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria has listed Governor Bago in a report for alleged violations of press freedom, highlighting concerns over his actions, including the closure of a local radio station in August.
