Ebonyi Police Detain Operatives Over Killing Incident

The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed the detention of its operatives allegedly involved in the shooting and killing of a motorcyclist in Abakaliki, the state capital of Ebonyi State, Nigeria. The incident took place on January 27, 2026, around 10:30 p.m. near Hariz Fill Station along the Enugu-Abakaliki Highway.

Preliminary reports suggest that the operatives, attached to the Central Police Station in Abakaliki, fired shots while responding to a distress call, resulting in the death of the motorcyclist identified as Nwanchor Uwaezuruik. The police command's spokesperson, SP Joshua Ukandu, stated that the officers involved have been taken into custody for further investigation.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department has been directed to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. The command expressed condolences to the deceased's family and assured the public of serving justice.
