Police Clarify IGP Did Not Order Shoot on Sight

The Nigeria Police Force issued a statement to correct what it termed a misrepresentation of the Inspector-General of Police's (IGP) comments regarding the use of firearms by police personnel. The Force clarified that the IGP merely reiterated the provisions of Force Order 237, which outlines the legal and operational conditions for firearm use.

The IGP informed stakeholders that officers had been adequately briefed on these provisions and understood the circumstances under which firearms could be deployed, in accordance with established Rules of Engagement. The statement emphasized that the IGP's remarks were meant to promote professionalism and compliance with operational guidelines, not to authorize indiscriminate use of force.

Additionally, the IGP condemned illegal possession of firearms and acts of violence, including unlawful killings. The Force urged the public and media to disregard reports suggesting that the IGP ordered officers to shoot suspects on sight, labeling such claims as inaccurate and out of context.
