IGP Disu Addresses Firearm Use in Benue Stakeholders Meeting

During a stakeholders’ meeting in Makurdi, Benue State, Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu addressed the use of firearms by police officers, which was reported by various media outlets as a shoot-on-sight order against illegal arms bearers. The Nigeria Police Force later clarified that Disu referenced Force Order 237, which outlines the legal and operational conditions for police firearm use.

Disu emphasized the need for police officers to act decisively against illegal arms carriers, stating, “We are tired of this issue of attack and retaliation.” He instructed officers that they do not need to wait for superior orders to deploy their firearms. Disu expressed concern for the safety of police and security personnel, stating, “We are tired of losing our men.” He also called for cooperation from stakeholders present to achieve peace in the state, indicating his commitment to returning until the situation improves.
