Abia Police Arrest 17 Cultists Amid Rising Violence

The Abia State Police Command, led by Commissioner Danladi Isa, announced the arrest of 17 male suspects aged between 18 and 28, connected to cult activities in the state. This action follows a surge in cult-related violence, including a fatal machete attack on May 13, 2026, and another shooting on May 24, 2026, near Opobo Junction.

The police recovered several items from the suspects, including five shotguns, three live ammunition, thirteen mobile phones of various makes, two cutlasses, one axe, and one black beret. The arrests were part of an intelligence-led operation by the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) aimed at curbing violent crime in the area.

Commissioner Isa reiterated the command's commitment to protecting lives and property and preventing crime in Abia State. The police are also conducting awareness campaigns to discourage youth involvement in cult activities and encourage the public to report suspicious activities.
