Rectors' Absence Delays 2026 Budget Engagement in Nigeria

The House of Representatives Committee on Polytechnics and Higher Technical Education, chaired by Hon. Fuad Kayode Laguda, was compelled to reschedule its engagement concerning the 2026 budget defense due to the absence of rectors from 10 of the 14 invited federal polytechnics. This situation was met with strong displeasure from the committee, which described the poor turnout as disappointing and unacceptable.

Out of 36 federal polytechnics in Nigeria, 22 had submitted their budget reports on time. However, only four rectors attended the session, citing the upcoming elections and restrictions on vehicle movement from 8 PM to 6 AM as reasons for their absence.

The committee expressed that institutions of such magnitude should plan better for national assignments and not treat them lightly. Consequently, the committee announced that it had no option but to adjourn the exercise to a later date when a fuller house is expected.
