Poor Plastic Waste Management Causes Flooding in Lagos

Dr. Olufemi Idowu Adegok, an expert in waste management, has identified poor plastic waste management as a significant cause of flooding in Lagos.

He noted that approximately 13,000 tons of waste, primarily plastic sachets and bottles, are generated daily, contributing to blockages in drainage systems during rainfall. Adegok highlighted that only 30-50% of plastic waste is captured for recycling, which could significantly reduce flooding and environmental degradation.

He pointed out that Lagos' recycling rate remains between three to six percent, with less than five percent of total waste being recovered. Adegok called for urgent action to enhance recycling efforts, including the establishment of a decentralized infrastructure and stronger economic incentives, such as a deposit return scheme and tax credits for recycled materials.

He also stressed the importance of formalizing and empowering waste workers and integrating recycling into climate finance initiatives to improve waste management in Lagos.
