Lagos Urged to Reform Waste Management Amid Crisis

Lagos is experiencing a severe waste management crisis, primarily due to the inadequacy of its landfill infrastructure, particularly at the Olusosun site. The city generates thousands of tons of waste daily, but the current system struggles to keep pace with the increasing volume caused by rapid urbanization and population growth.

The delays in waste disposal have led to a series of operational challenges for private sector participants in the waste collection system, including increased costs and reduced service frequency. The situation has resulted in unsightly refuse piles, blocked drainage systems, and heightened flood risks, alongside public health concerns due to disease vectors.

To address these issues, the Lagos State Government is urged to establish new engineered landfill sites and implement a circular economy model that emphasizes waste reduction, recycling, and energy recovery. This includes upgrading existing sites, introducing modern waste sorting systems, and encouraging local recycling initiatives to alleviate the pressure on landfills and improve overall waste management.
