NPA Reports 12.3% Cargo Growth in Q2 2026
In the second quarter of 2026, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) reported a 12.3% increase in total cargo throughput, rising to 35.7 million metric tonnes from 31.8 million metric tonnes in Q2 2025. Vessel traffic also saw a significant rise of 14.4%, with 1,201 ocean-going vessels recorded.
The increase in outward cargo was particularly notable, growing by 22%, while inward cargo rose by 7.7%. Container traffic increased by 11.3% to 602,392 TEUs, and transshipment containers reached 29,038 TEUs.
The NPA attributed these improvements to ongoing reforms aimed at modernizing port infrastructure and enhancing operational efficiency. Dr Abubakar Dantsoho, the NPA Managing Director, stated that the figures reflect the resilience of Nigeria's seaports and the authority's commitment to attracting more trade and investment.
The NPA plans to modernize aging facilities at Apapa and Tin Can Island ports to align with international standards.
