Nigerian Ports See 12.3% Cargo Throughput Growth
The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) released its Operational Performance Report for the Second Quarter of 2026, revealing significant improvements in operational activities. Cargo throughput increased by 12.3%, from 31,825,592 metric tonnes in Q2 2025 to 35,740,362 metric tonnes in Q2 2026.
Inward cargo accounted for 56.8% of total cargo, while outward cargo rose by 22%, demonstrating enhanced export performance. Vessel traffic also saw a 14.4% increase, with the number of ocean-going vessels rising from 1,050 to 1,201.
The Gross Registered Tonnage (GRT) of these vessels grew by 22.2%, from 40.87 million tonnes to 49.95 million tonnes. Container traffic increased by 11.3%, with inward laden containers up by 6.3%.
Vehicle traffic rose by 18.3%, reflecting improved automobile import activities. Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, Managing Director of the NPA, noted that these figures underscore the resilience of Nigeria’s seaports in facilitating trade.
