Nigeria's Power Crisis Deepens as Minister's Pledge Fails

The power crisis in Nigeria persists despite Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu's two-week pledge to improve electricity supply. Current power generation levels hover between 3,000 and 4,000 megawatts, significantly below expectations and leaving households and businesses without electricity.

Adelabu had assured Nigerians of imminent relief, but as the two-week timeline concluded, power supply remained inadequate. Reports indicate that 11 distribution companies (Discos) struggled to distribute 3,500 megawatts, a slight improvement from 2,900 megawatts previously.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Association of Power Generating Companies, Ogaji, noted that distribution companies have been rejecting load allocations, leading to financial losses in the sector. The situation is exacerbated by a gas shortage affecting thermal plants, and the overall power generation capacity in Nigeria remains critically low, with only 7,000 megawatts available for transmission.

The ongoing crisis has raised doubts about the feasibility of the Minister's promises and the overall efficiency of the power sector.
