Nigeria's Power Minister Forms Committee for Electricity Reform

Joseph Tegbe, the Minister of Power, has constituted a nine-member inter-agency committee to tackle issues arising from the decentralization of the electricity market in Nigeria. The committee aims to ensure sustained engagement among power sector agencies and resolve implementation issues related to the Electricity Act 2023.

Tegbe, who serves as the chairman of the committee, emphasized that the success of the transition to a decentralized electricity market relies heavily on collaboration among stakeholders. He called on stakeholders to view the decentralization not as a fragmentation but as an intelligent distribution that contributes to an integrated national electricity ecosystem.

The Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) is identified as a crucial enabler for economic growth, industrialization, job creation, and digital transformation. The committee has been given a duration of four weeks to review the issues raised and meet with stakeholders to facilitate the smooth operationalization of the Electricity Act.
