Presidency Denies Tinubu's Alleged Plans for Nigeria

The Nigerian Presidency issued a statement on Wednesday, denying allegations that President Bola Tinubu intends to rename Nigeria to the "United States of Nigeria" and abolish Sharia law in the northern region. The claims were described as false and part of a coordinated disinformation effort aimed at stirring political tension ahead of the upcoming general elections.

The statement, signed by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, emphasized that there is no truth to the viral story, which cited unnamed sources and was deemed a dubious plot by desperate politicians to create disaffection in the country. Onanuga clarified that President Tinubu has no plans to send a constitutional amendment bill to the National Assembly, as such changes require serious legislative scrutiny and cannot be done at the whim of the president.

He reiterated that the focus of the Tinubu administration is on economic reforms and delivering tangible benefits to Nigerians, urging citizens to ignore the false reports proliferating as the political campaign for the January 2027 elections begins.
