Tinubu's Presidency Denies Plans to Rename Nigeria

The Nigerian Presidency, through spokesman Bayo Onanuga, has refuted claims that President Bola Tinubu intends to rename Nigeria or abolish Sharia law in the northern region. The statement, issued on Thursday, characterized the viral report as fake news designed to create tension and destabilize the country ahead of the general elections.

Onanuga urged Nigerians to disregard the misleading information, which he attributed to desperate politicians seeking to stir political crises. He emphasized that any constitutional amendments would require a rigorous legal process involving the National Assembly and state legislatures, and not merely the whims of the President.

Onanuga further clarified that there are no plans to transmit a constitutional amendment bill, referred to as "Project True Federalism," to the National Assembly before the elections. He reiterated that President Tinubu remains focused on implementing economic reforms and delivering tangible benefits to Nigerians while cautioning against the spread of divisive and unverifiable information as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.
