Presidency Defends Secrecy in Oyo School Rescue Plans

The Nigerian presidency, represented by Special Assistant Olusegun Dada, defended its secretive strategy regarding rescue operations for kidnapped schoolchildren, arguing that public updates could jeopardize the safety of victims and security personnel. Dada responded to online criticisms, asserting that the government prioritizes the secure return of abducted individuals over public performance.

He warned against actions that could endanger ongoing operations and emphasized the importance of law enforcement agencies working without disclosing sensitive details. Amid rising concerns over school kidnappings, President Bola Tinubu approved the immediate recruitment of 1,000 forest guards in Oyo State to enhance security in forest corridors, which are often exploited by armed groups.

The recruitment process is set to begin in July 2026, with personnel drawn from local communities to improve surveillance and counter bandit operations.
