Nigeria Clarifies UK Migration Agreement Details

The Nigerian presidency, under Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has issued a clarification regarding the migration agreement with the United Kingdom, dismissing claims that it obligates Nigeria to accept non-citizens. The statement, released by Special Adviser Bayo Onanuga, emphasized that the agreement, signed during Tinubu's visit, does not require Nigeria to accept individuals from foreign nations.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Nigeria's Ministry of Interior and the UK Home Office aims to promote safe, orderly, and regular migration. The presidency noted that the agreement includes provisions for the dignified treatment of individuals being returned, in line with international human rights standards, and allows individuals to appeal deportation decisions.

Furthermore, the Nigerian Immigration Service retains sole authority over the issuance of travel documents and the management of entry procedures, ensuring that Nigeria does not cede control over its immigration processes.
