Nigeria Clarifies UK Migration Deal Terms and Responsibilities

The Nigerian Presidency issued a statement clarifying that the recent migration deal with the United Kingdom does not obligate Nigeria to accept foreign nationals. This clarification followed reports misrepresenting the agreement reached during President Bola Tinubu's state visit to the UK.

The memorandum of understanding (MOU) on immigration cooperation, signed by Nigeria's Minister of Interior and the UK Secretary of State for the Home Department, aims to strengthen bilateral relations and facilitate safe migration flows between the two countries. The 12-page MOU outlines provisions for the dignified return of migrants, ensuring respect for human rights and adherence to international treaties.

It specifies that Nigeria retains full responsibility for issuing travel documents and managing repatriation processes. The agreement includes support for reintegration of returnees, covering accommodation, transport, and access to education and entrepreneurship programs.

The MOU is valid for five years and can be renewed, similar to previous agreements signed in 2012, 2017, and 2022.
