Presidency Critiques Obi's One-Term Pledge as Untrustworthy

The presidency has criticized Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, for his recent pledge to serve only one term if elected president, stating that such a promise is not credible. Bayo Onanuga, the special adviser to the president on strategic communications, dismissed Obi's commitment, arguing that his political history demonstrates a pattern of broken loyalty.

Onanuga referenced Obi's previous affiliations with various political parties, including the Progress Grand Alliance and the People's Democratic Party, suggesting that Obi's past actions undermine his current promises. Obi's statement was made during an interview scheduled to air on New Central TV, where he claimed he would not remain in office beyond four years, even under duress.

In the 2023 presidential election, Obi finished third behind Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress and Atiku Abubakar of the People's Democratic Party. The next presidential election in Nigeria is scheduled for January 16, 2027.
