Presidency Grants Pardon to Notable Figures Including Herbert Macaulay

The Presidency announced the granting of a presidential pardon to Nigerian nationalist Herbert Macaulay, late Mamman Vatsa, former lawmaker Farouk Lawan, and 14 others, following the endorsement of the National Council of State. The decision, aimed at decongesting prisons and promoting restorative justice, was made public in Abuja.

Herbert Macaulay, known as the father of Nigerian nationalism, was posthumously pardoned for a conviction dating back to 1913. Similarly, Mamman Vatsa, a poet and former member of the Supreme Military Council, was pardoned posthumously for alleged coup plotting.

Farouk Lawan, a former House of Representatives member jailed for bribery, was also granted a pardon, along with other individuals serving sentences for various offenses, upon showing remorse and readiness for reintegration into society.
