Egbetokun Resigns as Inspector-General of Police

Kayode Egbetokun has resigned from his position as Inspector-General of Police, citing family issues that require his undivided attention. The resignation was confirmed by Bayo Onanuga, special adviser to the presidency, who informed that Egbetokun submitted his resignation letter on the same day.

The decision came after a meeting at the presidential villa in Abuja on Monday, where Egbetokun was reportedly summoned by the president. Sources indicate that the meeting was not routine, and Egbetokun arrived around the time a governor was attending an interfaith breakfast initiated by the president.

His appointment as Inspector-General of Police was on June 19, 2023, succeeding Usman Alkali Baba, whose tenure ended in September 2023. Egbetokun faced criticism regarding Nigeria's worsening security situation, which includes a rise in kidnappings, banditry, and terrorist attacks.

His resignation letter formally stated the need for his full attention to family matters.
