Presidency Urges Atiku to Abandon 2027 Ambitions

The Nigerian presidency, represented by spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, has urged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to abandon his aspirations for the 2027 presidential election. Onanuga emphasized the necessity of adhering to the established power rotation arrangement between the North and South of Nigeria, which he argues should produce the next president.

He criticized Atiku's renewed ambition as a self-serving move that undermines political conventions aimed at stabilizing Nigeria's democracy since 1999. During a recent interview, Atiku expressed his intent to contest for the presidency again, despite previous failures and internal divisions within the People's Democratic Party (PDP).

Onanuga accused Atiku of attempting to disrupt the power rotation agreement, recalling past electoral cycles where Atiku's candidacy led to significant defeats for the PDP. He further dismissed Atiku's claims regarding the power dynamics between the regions as dubious, citing historical context and the completion of terms by former presidents from both regions.
