Tinubu Prioritizes Drug Trafficking Fight in Nigeria

President Bola Tinubu prioritized the fight against drug trafficking during a celebration in Abuja on Friday, 26th October 2026, marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. He noted that the federal government is confronting challenges with a multifaceted approach, reflecting the year's theme.

Tinubu emphasized the evolving nature of the global drug problem, which requires constant vigilance and collective action. He acknowledged the extensive impact of drug abuse on individuals, families, workplaces, and national security.

The President commended the leadership of the NDLEA, led by Brig Gen Mohammed Buba Marwa (Rtd), for their outstanding efforts, which included 29,262 arrests and the seizure of 5,305,484.88 kilograms of illicit drugs valued at N1.5 trillion over the last 18 months. Marwa also highlighted Nigeria's collaboration with international partners to dismantle drug cartels.

The event featured a guest lecture by Prof Oluwatoyin Odeku, who discussed milestones achieved in the fight against illicit drugs over the past five years.
