Tinubu Seeks N9 Trillion Increase for 2026 Budget

President Bola Tinubu has formally requested the Senate's approval to raise the 2026 budget by N9 trillion, which would increase the total budget from N58.4 trillion to N67.4 trillion. This request was conveyed in a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and presented during a plenary session on Tuesday.

The President's objectives include enhancing fiscal transparency and ensuring effective implementation of national programs. Tinubu outlined three key objectives for this request, which include regularizing accounts of outstanding legacy commitments from previous appropriation cycles and addressing legacy obligations.

The additional N9 trillion is intended to ensure that critical national priorities receive adequate funding without compromising fiscal sustainability. Following the submission of the letter, Senate President Godswill Akpabio referred the request to the Appropriations Committee for further legislative review, with a deadline set for December 2025.
