Tinubu Requests Senate Approval for ₦67.7 Trillion Budget

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally sought the Senate's approval to increase the proposed 2026 budget by ₦9.3 trillion, raising it from ₦58.47 trillion to ₦67.7 trillion. This request was outlined in a letter read during a plenary session on Tuesday, following a two-week Eid el-Fitr break.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio referred the request to the Senate Committee on Appropriations for further legislative consideration. The proposed upward review of the budget is aimed at regularizing outstanding legacy capital projects inherited from previous administrations.

The adjustment is intended to ensure the completion of ongoing projects captured in earlier budgets and to support key transport infrastructure projects aligned with the administration's development agenda. Additionally, the request is part of the government's efforts to sustain economic reform and ensure the execution of critical development projects across the country while preserving macro-fiscal stability and reducing pressure on domestic financial markets.
