Former Commissioner Urges Kano Government to Respect Press Freedom Amid Criticism

Former Commissioner Malam Muhammad Garba has advised the Kano State government to address press freedom concerns raised by a report from the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism (WSCIJ). The report ranked Kano among the top three Nigerian states violating press freedom, sparking criticism from local and international media rights groups.

Garba emphasized the importance of cooperating with the press to improve transparency and public trust in governance. He condemned the government's dismissive reaction to the report and called for increased protection of journalists.

The former president of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) also urged Governor Abba Yusuf's administration to ensure the safety and freedom of journalists.
