Tinubu Seeks to Block Release of FBI, DEA Records

Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the President of Nigeria, has intervened in a case before the US District Court for the District of Columbia, requesting the court to deny a motion for summary judgment filed by Aaron Greenspan, founder of PlainSite. Tinubu's legal team argues against the release of documents related to him that were requested under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), which Greenspan claims includes the “entire FBI file” on Tinubu and records from FBI interviews conducted between 1992 and 1993.

In April 2025, Judge Beryl Howell ruled that the FBI and DEA had improperly refused to confirm or deny the existence of records related to Tinubu and ordered them to process non-exempt documents. Tinubu's lawyers contend that FOIA is intended for government transparency, not for obtaining personal information about individuals.

They argue that Greenspan's requests focus on Tinubu's private information rather than on government misconduct. The legal team also cited FOIA Exemption 7(C) and the US Privacy Act to support their claims.
