Nigeria's Cooking Gas Price Rises to ₦1,150 per Kg

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority announced an increase in the domestic base price of natural gas to ₦2.18 per mmbtu effective April 1, 2026, up from ₦2.13 per mmbtu in 2025. This change represents a five-cent rise, or 2.35 percent.

Experts warn that this adjustment may trigger ripple effects across several sectors of the economy, particularly affecting electricity tariffs and manufacturing costs. Current market data indicates that the price of liquefied petroleum gas (cooking gas) has risen to ₦1,150 per kilogram, with costs varying by cylinder size: ₦3,450 for 3kg, ₦5,750 for 5kg, ₦11,500 for 10kg, ₦13,800 for 12kg, and ₦14,375 for 12.5kg.

Analysts caution that these price adjustments could lead to higher operational costs for businesses and services, ultimately compounding the financial burden on households already facing rising food and transport costs.
