Nigeria Press Council Urges Government to Safeguard Information Sovereignty Amid Digital Evolution

The Nigeria Press Council, along with key media bodies like NPAN, NGE, BON, GOCOP, and NUJ, issued a joint statement urging the Nigerian government to protect the country's information sovereignty. The statement, signed by prominent figures like Ladi Bala, Ezinne Anaba, Salihu Abdulhamid Dembo, Danlami Nmodu, and Alhassan Yahaya, highlights the need for regulations to counter the dominance of foreign digital platforms in disseminating Nigerian news content.

The stakeholders emphasized the importance of a robust local journalism sector to combat misinformation, disinformation, and polarization. They referenced global examples from the EU, UK, Australia, Canada, and South Africa to advocate for measures that ensure fair remuneration for local content creators and safeguard journalistic integrity.

The statement also called for strategic leadership to protect Nigeria's democratic conversations from being influenced by opaque commercial algorithms beyond national control.
