CAF Increases Prize Money for African Club Competitions

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced substantial increases in prize money for winners of its club competitions. For the 2025-26 CAF Champions League season, the winning club will receive $6 million (approximately €5.18 million), up from $4 million awarded last season.

The CAF Confederation Cup, which is the African equivalent of the UEFA Europa League, will now offer $4 million to the winning club, marking a 50% increase from the previous season. The prize money for the runners-up remains unchanged, with the beaten finalist in the Champions League receiving $2 million and the Confederation Cup runner-up receiving $1 million.

This increase in prize money comes in response to complaints from clubs regarding financial losses incurred during competitions, particularly due to expensive and time-consuming travel arrangements. Patrice Motsepe, a South African businessman, has been serving as the president of CAF since 2021 and is currently in his second four-year term.

The quarter-final first leg matches for both competitions are scheduled for the weekend, with eight fixtures planned, including Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa hosting Stade Malien of Mali in the Champions League.
