Nigeria Launches Diaspora Mortgage Loan Initiative

The Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), led by Managing Director and Chief Executive Shehu Osidi, is introducing a diaspora mortgage loan initiative designed to facilitate homeownership for Nigerians living abroad. This initiative aims to leverage the estimated $20.1 billion in remittances sent by the Nigerian diaspora, which is believed to consist of 17 to 20 million individuals. The program will allow eligible Nigerians aged 18 and above to register on a dedicated digital platform and contribute monthly in foreign currency, typically between $100 to $200, for at least 12 months. Upon qualification, contributors can apply for mortgage loans up to N100 million through accredited primary mortgage banks. The loans will feature a maximum interest rate of nine percent and a repayment tenor of up to 10 years. The initiative includes measures to ensure funds are used for property development and to reduce the risk of financial mismanagement. This structured approach aims to transform remittances into tangible housing outcomes, addressing Nigeria's significant housing deficit.
